Jamaica High Commissioner H.E. Evadne Coye with the Charles Town Jamaican Maroons

Jamaica's Flag-Raising Ceremony

As Jamaica marks its 47th anniversary as an independent nation on 6 August, it is fitting that this historic relationship was celebrated in Halifax and that both the Maroons and the Bank of Nova Scotia were associated with this celebration.

For the very first time, the Black, Green and Gold Flag of Jamaica was officially hoisted in the City of Halifax in the presence of the High Commissioner of Jamaica to Canada, H. E. Ruby Evadne Coye. For the first time since 1796, Maroons from Jamaica came to Halifax, but this time as a celebratory cultural group representing a proud Maroon community. Col. Frank Lumsden and members of the Charles Town Maroon Drummers participated in the brief ceremony which accompanied the raising of the Jamaican Flag. Their presence in Nova Scotia was facilitated by a generous contribution from the Bank of Nova Scotia.
